Meet Evelyn Mutisya

What is your background, and how did you become interested in your work/project field?

Hi, my name is Evelyn Mutisya a graphic designer from Nairobi, Kenya, I have always been drawn to the world of art and design. My earliest memories are tinted with hues of my childhood paintings, a passion that gradually evolved into advanced tools on screen, allowing me to earn diplomas in both Graphic Design and 3D Animation, complemented by a certificate in AutoCAD. This passion, unwaveringly supported by my parents, laid the foundation for my academic and professional pursuits.

For over 12 years, I've been a cornerstone in the branding agency industry, translating visions into impactful visual narratives. But beyond the screen and canvas, there's a deeper mission I hold dear. Recently, I've channeled my skills and resources to uplift the lives of the children in Bondo, Kenya. Working alongside a dedicated organization, I am committed to ensuring these young souls receive both a quality education and the sustenance they need.

Art and design are more than a profession to me; they are a way of life and a medium to give back to the community and the people who've always believed in me, especially my parents.

What are some of the projects or initiatives you're currently working on or have completed in the past?

My 12-year odyssey in the field of graphic design has been as much about pushing boundaries in art as it has been about breaking barriers in perceptions. In Kenya, graphic design is predominantly perceived as a male-dominated industry. This not only molded the assumptions of many who doubted my capabilities purely based on gender but also led to missed opportunities early in my career. The underlying skepticism that a woman might not fit the mold or meet the standards was a challenge I was determined to overcome.

Through relentless dedication, continuous learning, and the pursuit of excellence, I've worked diligently to carve out a name for myself in this space, not just as a graphic designer, but as a woman reshaping the narrative. Projects that range from crafting impactful brand identities to designing campaigns that bridge traditional Kenyan motifs with modern aesthetics have been my canvas of expression and defiance against the status quo.

One standout initiative involved designing a branding campaign for a local Kenyan enterprise in the food industry. The objective was to seamlessly integrate traditional Kenyan motifs with modern design elements. It was a beautiful experience, marrying our rich heritage with contemporary design techniques, and it stands as a testament to the power of graphic design in bridging cultures and eras.

Beyond the pixels and vectors, my heart resonates with a cause that's deeply personal – charity work in Bondo, Kenya. Working alongside a dedicated organization, our mission is to uplift the lives of the less fortunate children. Ensuring they not only have access to quality education but also to the daily sustenance they need, has been both a challenge and a profound reward. Every breakthrough, be it a child's smile or their academic progress, adds another layer of purpose to my journey.

As I chart the course for my future endeavors, my vision is clear: to meld my expertise in graphic design with philanthropic causes, all while championing the belief that talent knows no gender. Through visual narratives, I aim to inspire, advocate, and effect change, both within the industry and in the wider community.
